Toyota 4A GZE Engine

The Toyota 4A-GZE is a performance-oriented,1.6-liter, supercharged, DOHC inline-four engine from Toyota’s A-series engine family, based on the naturally aspirated 4A-GE engine. It was famously used in the first-generation Toyota MR2 from 1987-1989 and featured stronger internal components than the base 4A-GE, an electric magnetic clutch supercharger, and an intercooler. The engine is known for its excellent performance for its size and is a popular choice for engine swaps and performance modifications, though it has relatively poor low-end torque.

Key Characteristics
  • Engine Type: 1.6-liter, inline-four, DOHC.
  • Aspiration: Supercharged.
  • Internals: Features stronger components than the naturally aspirated 4A-GE to handle the added stress of forced induction.
  • Supercharger: Equipped with a supercharger with an electric magnetic clutch that engages at specific RPMs to provide a boost.
  • Intercooler: Includes an intercooler to cool the compressed air before it enters the engine.
Common Applications & Popularity
  • Vehicle Fitment: The 4A-GZE was factory-installed in the first-generation Toyota MR2 (AW11).
  • Engine Swap: It is a common engine swap in vehicles like the Toyota Corolla AE86.
  • Performance: It’s a popular platform for tuners due to its compact size and high-revving nature, though it requires significant modifications to achieve high horsepower levels.
Compared to other 4A-GE variants
  • Lower Power Output (vs. 20-valve):

The supercharged 4A-GZE produced around 145 horsepower, which is less than later 20-valve 4A-GE engines.

  • Stronger Internals (vs. naturally aspirated):
While the 4A-GE was available in 16-valve and 20-valve versions, the GZE variant included reinforced internals and forced induction for better power and reliability.
The Toyota 4A-GZE is a 1.6-liter, DOHC, 16-valve inline-4 engine that was produced in two main generations between 1986 and 1995. Both generations were equipped with a factory-fitted roots-type supercharger and a strong 7-rib cast-iron block.

    • No oil squirters
    • Distributor ignition (MR2) or distributor-less ignition with twin coil packs (Corolla)
    • Big port cylinder head, no T-VIS
Second generation (1990–1995)
The revised 4A-GZE appeared in later AE92 and AE101 Corollas, featuring several key upgrades.
  • Power output: 165–170 PS (163–168 hp) at 6,400 rpm (depending on application)
  • Torque output: 206–210 N⋅m (152–155 lb-ft) at 4,400 rpm
  • Compression ratio: 8.9:1
  • Supercharger boost: 10 psi (0.69 bar) via a smaller pulley
  • Fuel metering: Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor
  • Notable features:
    • Piston oil squirters in the block
    • Direct ignition (Direct Fire Twin Coil)
    • Small port cylinder head
    • Some AE101 models also came with a dual muffler exhaust
